Dear Members,

I hope you enjoyed the rabanada recipes. In this posting, I’m adding a recipe of one of my favorite recipes for a special “stuffing”, that we call farofa. A friend from Brazil gave me this recipe, when I told her I was going to cook our Christmas dinner for the first time and I was looking for the best of both worlds for our meal!

I hope you enjoy it:

Farofa de Natal
Ingredientes
2 pacotes de biscoito tipo a¡gua e sal
200 grs de presunto
200 grs de castanha de caju
1 lata de milho verde
100 grs de passas pretas sem caroco
100 grs de manteiga
1 colher de gordura de porco
1 cebola madia
sal
Modo de Preparo
Passar em um multiprocessador, ou no liquidificador mesmo, o
biscoito e reservar. O presunto e reservar. A castanha e
reservar.
Levar ao fogo a manteiga com com a gordura de porco, com a cebola
ralada. Sem deixar escurecer por a farinha de biscoito, mexer bem
e em seguida ir colocando a castanha, o presunto mexendo sempre
para nao escurecer. O milho e as passas por altimo qdo o fogo ja
estiver desligado. Colocar o sal depois da farofa pronta, e muito
cuidado com ele, pois alguns ingredientes ja tem sal.

In Brazil, we don’t put the stockings out for Santa, we put shoes on the windows,
because it’s not cold enough for fireplaces…
Sharing memories of my childhood in Brazil is so difficult because I have so many memories, smells, flavors stories, songs….I think the appetizers, the paozinho, the champanhe, the brigadeiros, queijo de cuia….
Tenho saudade destas coisas, de sentar junto com a minha fami­lia e lembrar dos
natais em que aramos pequenos…
e que eu ganhei 10 bonecas e no ano novo estavam todas quebradas, dos amigos
secretos, da casa do meu  ava e todas nas dormindo no saton!….
( brigadeiros, sharp cheese. I miss those things, such as sitting with
my family and remembering Christmases past, when we were children and I got 10 dolls in one Christmas and they were all broken by New Years, memories of secret santa, my grandad’s house, the attic where many of us girls slept for many years!….

It was a pleasure to share my memories with you!

Today I went to a Brazilian Market- Victors In Riverside, NJ and I bought a Chocotone, a panetoni made with chocolate. Sendexnet, also sells it online, great website!

Dear Members,

Looking at the leaves falling and the brown and orange tones make me think about fall in Brazil, in my city, Salvador…..we basically have two seasons rain and sun seasons, no fall or winter…we can go to the beach in the winter…..where I used to live is in the 80s in the winter!! If you travel down south, you will enjoy colder temperatures, but not like the US and Europe and other countries in South America!!

I remember looking at the leaves turning brown for the first time when I moved and thinking….they don’t turn brown in Bahia……

Fall in Northeast Brazil is a time for rain, lots of fain, but no drastic changes in the landscape…..our fall starts in March, by the way!!

Fall is one of my favorite seasons, when I have a chance to enjoy apple cider, to make my favorite soup or pie and smell the crisp air….

To celebrate the differences between the fall I have decided to include a song and a recipe.

Brigadeiro

Ingredients:

I can of condensed milk

2 tsp of chocolate powder

1 tsp of butter

Mix the ingredients and bring them to cook at low temperature until boils, stirring. Then, when it is loose on the pan, it’s ready. Spread butter on a plate and pour the mixture. Cool it for two hours and make little balls. Pass them on confectioners sugar or jimmies.

My mom makes them white and brown and attach the two balls, making a casadinho.

Dear Members,

I’m working on a Halloween class for my Portuguese students and when I teach them how to say typical Halloween vocabulary and sentences in Portuguese, I tell them that Halloween is not a holiday celebrated in Brazil. English Schools usually celebrate it to bring the culture to their classroom environment, but we don’t have a tradition of celebrating it.

I can’t imagine how parents would feel to let children knock on doors asking for candy…..I don’t think it would be a culturally accepted party due to the reality in the majority of Brazilian Cities, where people are really careful about their children and their safety.

Leaving that aspect behind, I looked for some famous Brazilian Candy recipes which I will be sharing here on our blog:

Minha mae sempre fazia este doce nos nossos aniversa¡rios….( my mother always made this candy on our birthdays…)

Bombom de Uva

INGREDIENTES:

1 lata de leite condensado (395 g) (1 can of condensed milk)

1 gema (1 egg yolk)

1 cacho de uvas brancas sem caroco (tipo moscatel) ( 1 bunch of green seedless grapes)

300 g de chocolate cobertura ao leite (optional Chocolate for coating)

asucar refinado (refined sugar)

MODO DE PREPARO:

Leve ao fogo o leite condensado com a gema peneirada, mexendo at desgrudar do fundo da panela. ( Cook the condensed milk with the yolk until it is not sticking to the pot anymore)

Retire, deixe esfriar em um prato por no ma­nimo 6 horas (para que a massa descanse). ( Let it cool for at least 6 hours)

Modele a massa nas macos, formando capinhas para as uvas.( Open little pieces in round shapes, put the grape inside and close it)

Enrole uma a uma e passe levemente no ascar e pela cobertura de chocolate, dissolvida em banho-maria. ( coat with sugar and lightly on the melted chocolate)

I can guarantee it’s really good!
