After two successful Summer Camps and the great feedback from parents and students who attended the camps, I decided to share my thoughts on the subject.

When we had contemplated offer the summer camps, I searched for existing literature on this subject, to get some ideas from colleagues on how to bring my indoor classes to the outdoor setting, after a few weeks of online and bookstore search, I was not able to find any books or articles which would help me plan the activities.

I worked with my assistant to find camp activities which could be used with the topics we had originally proposed to the clients and give it a new twist to make the experience educational, interactive and fun at the same time.

The result amazed me because children were running, fishing, looking for bugs, treasure hunting, playing tug of war, soccer, making sand castles and more…….. in Spanish!!!!

I heard from a grandparent: “I had to drag my grandaughter here, because she said she hated Spanish, but I’m glad I did, because now she said she really enjoys it and it gave her a different perspective on learning a foreign language” – that was said by Allie’s Grandmother.

I have enjoyed working the summer camps so much that I decided to make the materials, ideas and plans available to teachers who wish to have access to them.

Please contact me if you wish to receive files with activities and suggestions for materials used.

When planing new activities for our fall classes, I will definitely try to incorporate some of the great ideas used at the camps and maybe trade the sand for some leaves and marshmallows!

Dear Members,

We have happily agreed to host an exchange student from Spain this summer. When my husband and I agreed, we had no idea how amazing the experience would be!

The idea of having a foreign child in your home, who usually doesn’t speak the language spoken in the household and has our culture and environment as a whole new world to explore, made us rethink our values and appreciate more our lives and culture.

Amazing moments such as when he saw a squirrel for the first time in his life or when he made a yucky face to peanut butter; see him hugging my son as a brother and have him by my side 24/7 because I’m the only person in the household who really speaks his language, has been to his country and understands his fears and anxiety….all those moments make the experience priceless for a family and for the children in the household.

I must confess my only dilemma is use the Spanish to help him, when I’m really not helping him because he is here to learn English….

I wanted to share our experience with other parents who might be searching for feedback from parents who had done it.

I strongly encourage parents to do it!!!

I was pleasantly surprised today when my youngest student, 12 months old, said her first word, uno!

Many articles published discuss the effects of Early Foreign Language Learning on the child’s native language development and other skills, such as early reading, better test taking skills, math and reasoning skills highly improved and the list goes on and on.

If your goal is to improve or boost one of those areas or just bringĀ  a joyful experience to your child, early foreign language learning is definitely an educational and fun experience I would recommend!
